In Search of Russian Love: Transnational Courtship and Marriage
Shu-Ju Ada Cheng PhD.

In Search of Russian Love: Transnational Courtship and Marriage

In this paper, I replace the term mail order bride with transnational courtship and marriage. Most of the scholarship on “mail order bride” studies women in the industry. The literature often represents women as victims and as sexual objects without human agency. In my larger project, I turn my attention to men engaged in this process. My intention is to understand why they decide to engage in the transnational courtship and marriage, what difficulties they encounter, and what are their views concerning foreign women and American women. In addition, I explore their engagement with feminism. I intend to expel the myths that men involved in this process are all oppressors and exploit Third World women. This project intends to honestly examine men who are in search of Russian love.
